Getting to Hangzhou

Buying train and bus tickets in China is easy. Hotels can usually buy tickets for you for a (usually small) fee. The following is meant as a guide for planning your itinerary.

From Shanghai

By Train

Trains to Hangzhou leave from the Hongqiao Train Station (one of the last stops on the west end of lines 2 and 10 on subway). They leave frequently and cost either about 50rmb for the slow trains (1hr 20min) or about 80rmb for the faster trains (50-60mins). You want to go to Hangzhou Station, not Hangzhou South Station (Hangzhou Nan), which is a very long bus ride from the center of the city. You may notice many Chinese citizens buying train tickets from machines. A Chinese ID is needed to use the machines, so please remember to bring your passport and find the shortest line at a window.
Trains leave starting at about 6:15am and the last until about 9:30. The last trains back to Shanghai leave around 9:30, getting into Hongqiao Station around 11pm, just when the subway is closing, so if you want to be sure to get the subway, best to leave by 9:00pm.

By Bus

Buses from Suzhou come into Hangzhou's North Bus Station from the Suzhou North and South Bus stations. We provide pick-up from Hangzhou's North Bus Station.

From Suzhou

By train

Trains to Hangzhou leave from two train stations in Suzhou. The faster trains (1hr. 15mins) leave from the North train station, cost about 110-120 rmb, and arrive in Hangzhou's main train station. There are about 10 trains a day. The slower trains leave from the Suzhou main train station, take 2 hours (approx 80rmb) to over 4 hours (approx 50rmb), and arrive at Hangzhou's south train station. Hangzhou's south train station is located far from the center of the city and it takes 45min to 1.5 hours to get downtown, depending on whether you take a taxi or bus. There are also about 10 of the slower trains per day.

By Bus

Buses from Suzhou come into Hangzhou's North Bus Station from the Suzhou North and South Bus stations. We provide pick-up from Hangzhou's North Bus Station.

From the Airport

Flights into Hangzhou arrive at the Xiaoshan airport. Right outside the baggage pick-up area, there is a ticket office where you can get tickets (20rmb) for the bus into Hangzhou. It takes 30-40 minutes and leaves every 15-30 mins (or whenever the bus has filled up.) It makes three stops in Hangzhou, the train station, the Grand Metropark Hotel, and Wulin Square.
